Around the world, the lack of access to emergency medical care is a significant cause of preventable illness, disability, and death. While developed nations have both the transportation and medical infrastructure to handle acutely ill patients effectively, these resources are lacking in developing nations, presenting a significant challenge to those caring for the acutely ill.   

Global Emergency Care Collaborative, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, has pioneered Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP) training programs in southwestern rural Uganda, where doctors are scarce. Local Ugandan nurses are trained in emergency care services, so that they can save lives and prevent disability for thousands of patients whom otherwise would not be able to access this level of care in a timely manner. These ECPs then take ownership of the training program by teaching the next course of ECPs, creating a scalable, sustainable emergency care system through human resource capacity building.  This program has made specific improvements in clinical and public health outcomes, showing that sustainable capacity building and appropriate emergency care can make a big difference. GECC is working closely with the Ministry of Health and regional universities to expand our training programs nationally. With more significant financial backing, this expansion will improve access to life-saving emergency care for millions of people, and build health worker capacity by creating this new 'cadre' of Emergency Care Practitioners, a novel approach to emergency care provision in the developing world.
